What is straight japanese swords?

Straight Japanese swords, also known as Chokuto, were the first type of swords used in ancient Japan during the Yayoi period, around 300 BC. These swords had a straight blade with no curve, unlike the later curved Katana swords.

The Chokuto were primarily used by foot soldiers and were not as effective in battle as the later curved swords. However, they had a significant role in Japanese history as they were the preferred weapon of Prince Yamato Takeru, who according to legend, used this sword to defeat a giant serpent.

The straight blade of Chokuto was made from iron or steel, and the hilt was covered with a wrapping of silk or leather. The sword had a sharpened cutting edge on one side and was single-handed.

The Chokuto's design changed over time, and they evolved into more curved swords, such as Tachi and Katana. Today, straight Japanese swords are rarely used in battle but are still popular among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
